How to apply for a driving licence renewal

You’re in luck if you have a MyGovID verified account and possess a Public Services Card (PSC), as you can easily apply for your driving licence renewal online.

Make sure to provide proof of your current physical address if it’s different from the one you initially provided when you signed up. If you’re a non-EU or EEA citizen, you’ll need to demonstrate that you reside in Ireland.

Additionally, if necessary, be prepared to submit a medical report form.

Renewing your driving licence in person

If you can’t renew your licence online, you’ll need to swing by an NDLS centre in person. No worries, you can easily schedule an appointment and get a ticket by checking out the Locations page to find the nearest NDLS centre. When you visit, don’t bother bringing photographs because your photo and signature will be digitally captured during the application process.

If you want to apply for a Driving Licence or Learner Permit, you no longer need to fill out an application form. You can find guidance notes on this at ndls.ie.

When you’re renewing your driving licence, make sure to bring along these important documents:

  • Your current or most recent driving licence. Don’t worry if it’s lost or damaged, just bring another valid photo ID.
  • Your PPS number proof.
  • The required fee, check out the ‘Rates’ section for details.
  • If you’re not from the EU or EEA, you’ll need to show that you live in Ireland.
  • Make sure to bring a proof of address dated within the last 6 months if your current address isn’t on your permit and it’s different from the one you provided to the Department of Social Protection for your Public Services Card.
  • If needed, bring the Driving Licence Medical Report Form or the Driving Licence Eyesight Report Form, more info can be found below.
